Like her dad before her, Dee Masciola joined the Navy to see the world. And see it she did: Her tours of duty took her all over the U.S., Puerto Rico and Italy. But after putting in her 20 years and retiring, Masciola realized she craved a life without firearms, body armor or salutes. So when she returned to her small hometown of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, she opened a tanning facility and then a full-service beauty salon. Following a hardcore military career that included working on aircraft and serving as a drill sergeant, the change in her work life seemed like a surprising second act. But to Masciola it was just common sense—a natural progression in her active life.
